Feng Shui Enhancements ? Year of the Water Snake

Water Snake 2013 300x184 Feng Shui Enhancements Year of the Water Snake

Sunday February 10th sees the start of the new lunar year of the Water Snake. In London there is a huge celebration planned, likely to be the biggest new year celebrations outside of China. This year I can?t travel in to central London to watch as I have a prior engagement but if the celebrations are anything like last year anyone who does manage to attend will be treated to some wonderful sights, sounds and smells. If you are attending this, or any other new year celebration, I hope you have a great time.

?The shifting energies as we wave goodbye to the Water Dragon and welcome in the Water Snake lead to great opportunities to enhance the Feng Shui in our homes to bring about positive change. Water Snake years can be volatile and we can expect a roller coaster ride around the world but they also offer us some wonderful opportunities to enhance our career and financial fortunes. Before we look at how we can make the most of this Water Snake year let us look at what this year is likely to bring across the world in general.

Water Snakes mix high yin with rising yang so can be unpredictable. Expect the unexpected this year. On a positive note there is likely to be a renewed sense of optimism and people are going to feel happier and more confident about the future. This optimism is not misplaced, world fortunes will improve after the last few years of recession, but there are likely to be a few blips before we see a steady and sustained period of growth.

In politics this is a year for charismatic leaders. At least one country will gain a new leader who appears to have come from nowhere with promises of change and growth. Although his words, and yes I believe this leader will be a man, sound exciting and refreshing he is unlikely to follow up on his promises meaning that he may not be in power for long. It could well be a year for empty words and we can expect quite a few of the most powerful leaders in the world making promises that they cannot keep. In saying that one long standing conflict will be resolved and an uneasy truce called after intervention by a powerful third party who does deliver that which is promised.

Financial markets will improve this year but it will be an up and down year where fortunes can be won and lost daily. Short term traders will do well as markets will be volatile. Those saving in the long term need to hang in there and try and ignore the dips. There will be many dips this year but they are only short term. Successful companies will be those who are in the financial, building and research sectors, mining and energy companies may not fare so well. Asian markets are likely to do better than those in Europe and the US.

This year could be a good year for knowledge, learning and research and there could well be a medical breakthrough that could bring major advancements in curing a disease or long standing problem. This breakthrough will benefit millions. There will also be a continued focus on new technologies, although at least one high profile launch may not go as planned and a new invention may be hit by problems.

Looking at the less positive aspects of the Water Snake year there is a high likelihood of unpredictable weather with severe storms and tornadoes hitting the USA. Now I know that this is not unusual but this year we may well see storms that are more powerful than normal. We could also see a major earthquake in the west, possibly in the first few months of the year. Terrorist activity could increase and although as I have said a long standing conflict may well be resolved new conflicts will unfortunately start, possibly where they are not expected.

Turning our attention now to more personal matters, the year of the Water Snake rewards those who work hard and are prepared to put in the hours to gain the success that they want. Water Snake years are especially good for increasing wealth and business fortunes so let us look at how we can make the most of the year by enhancing the energy in our home with Feng Shui cures

Feng Shui Enhancements for the year of the Water Snake

To enhance career fortunes place a large mirror in a room in the north of your home, or on the north wall of your home office. Balance the yin of water with the yang snake by ensuring your mirror has a solid wooden frame.

The Water Snake likes to shout about it?s success, even if it has to be said, if there isn?t an awful lot to shout about. If you want to ensure that you have career success this year make sure that you place any symbols of your success prominently in the north of your home. Certificates of merit, awards, objects that you have bought to celebrate an achievement should be placed where they can easily be seen.

Increase the opportunities to attract wealth to your home by installing a moving water feature at the front of your home or in the entrance hall. If you haven?t got the space for a small fountain consider placing a small aquarium in your hall or living room.

Stimulate wealth energy by hanging a clear quartz crystal by your front door. Crystals make excellent Feng Shui enhancements and can be used in many ways. Place bowls of crystals on tables, scatter crystals around the base of plants or wear them around the wrist and neck. Good crystals for the year of the Water Snake are Smoky Quartz, Lapis Lazuli and Turquoise.

Celebrate the year of the Water Snake by buying a snake ornament. Crystal or glass snakes should be placed in the north or south east sectors of your home, your home office or your living room. The ornament will serve as a perfect reminder of how you will reap dividends from your hard work this year and if you focus on it whilst meditating it may well provide you with new ideas and inspiration for money making schemes.

To end with a note of caution, the Water Snake is a very volatile creature. It rewards hard work and dedication but can penalise those who do not think ideas through. It is a great year to start or expand a business, get a new job and find new sources of income but do your research, plan carefully and make your move only when you are sure of success. The Water Snake can be a powerful ally but a fickle friend.

Postal Service loss narrows to $1.3 billion in October-December

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Postal Service cut its losses by more than half in its first quarter as mail tied to the November elections, and stronger revenue from holiday-related packages contributed to a better quarter.

The postal agency, which recently announced plans to cut back on Saturday deliveries because of financial problems, lost $1.3 billion in the October through December quarter compared with a year ago loss of $3.3 billion, officials said on Friday.

USPS Chief Financial Officer Joe Corbett said the Postal Service still expects to face extremely low levels of cash during 2013.

"The need for such cost-saving initiatives like five-day mail delivery are borne out by the continuing loss of first-class mail and the resulting deep and unsustainable financial losses," Corbett said on Friday.

"We cannot continue to operate on a precipice," he said.

The mail service has been grappling with tumbling mail volumes as Americans communicate more online, and has struggled under the weight of massive required payments for future retiree health benefits.

The October through December period, which is the first quarter of the Postal Service's fiscal year, is typically the strongest because of the holidays.

Officials said total mail volume during the quarter fell to 43.5 billion pieces from 43.6 billion a year earlier. A dip in first-class mail volume was mitigated by the 3.6 percent rise in standard volume, largely due to official election and political mail.

The Postal Service also set aside less this year for its annual payment for future retiree health benefits, which contributed to a 9.8 percent drop in operating expenses to $18.9 billion during the quarter.

A 2006 law requires the Postal Service to fund 75 years worth of its future retirees' healthcare by 2016.

The Postal Service has blamed much of its financial troubles on the massive payments into this fund. The independent government agency relies on sales of stamps and other products rather than taxpayer dollars to fund its operations.

Last year, the Postal Service had to account for two such payments after Congress delayed a payment initially due in 2011. The mail agency defaulted on both but still had to account for them in financial reports.

Officials said they expect to default again on this year's $5.6 billion contribution, which is due at the end of September.

Excluding the prefunding requirement for future retiree health benefits, the Postal Service posted $100 million in operational profits in its first quarter.

"The report makes clear that the top financial burden is the 2006 congressional mandate to pre-fund future retiree health benefits, which no other agency or company is required to do," Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers said.

The Postal Service's financial report, he said, shows the folly of making drastic cuts in service such as the plan to eliminate first-class mail delivery on Saturdays.

"The USPS should focus on urging Congress to reform the pre-funding requirement, not on a counterproductive slashing of services that would hurt the public, businesses and the Postal Service itself," Rolando said.

CALLING ON CONGRESS

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe again called on the U.S. Congress to pass legislation alleviating the agency's woes. The agency wants to stop making the payments for future benefits and to take over its own health care plan, among other changes.

Lawmakers tried last year to pull together legislation to overhaul the agency's business model but were unable to agree on how to do it.

U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Carper, who has pledged to push for postal service legislation, said that despite the Postal Service's progress in trimming costs, a lot remains to be done to fix the agency's outdated business model.

"Piecemeal efforts like those announced in recent days and months will not be enough to solve the Postal Service's financial challenges for the long haul," Carper said in a written statement.

With gun control, immigration and looming federal spending cuts dominating the attention of Congress this year, it appears unlikely lawmakers will tackle postal legislation soon.

In an effort to spur Congress to act, the mail agency earlier this week announced plans to stop delivering first-class mail on Saturdays starting in the first week of August. The agency said cutting back to five-day mail delivery would save $2 billion a year.

The move prompted an outcry from postal unions and some lawmakers, who argued the Postal Service was circumventing Congress. Lawmakers for decades have prevented the Postal Service from scrapping Saturday delivery.

"My encouragement to Congress would be to please not put any restrictions on us moving ahead," Donahoe said. "We've got to make this change, we've got to get savings."

The Postal Service will continue delivering packages on Saturdays and will keep post offices on their normal schedules.

Packages have been a bright spot in a series of bleak financial reports as Americans order products from online retailers such as e-Bay Inc and Amazon.com Inc.

No softballs at the Power roundtable - Automotive News

MARK RECHTIN

February 8, 2013 - 11:36 am ET

ORLANDO -- Most Q&A sessions at industry conferences are loaded with softballs, easy questions lobbed for the on-stage executive speaker to knock out of the park.

But making AutoNation CEO Mike Jackson the grand inquisitor -- especially when his target is Honda exec John Mendel -- changes the scenario in a big way. There are no sacred cows when Jackson is running the show.

At the J.D. Power Automotive Industry Roundtable here, Jackson confronted Mendel on the subject of stair-step incentives. Honda has been relatively frugal in customer-cash incentives, but has frequently used volume-based stair-step dealer incentives to push end-of-cycle vehicles out of the door.

Prefacing his question by calling stair-step "arbitrary and capricious," Jackson described the incentive as "Three-Card Monte on 42nd Street ? and the retailer looks like the fool."

Jackson then asked why Honda continues to use such tactics that pit Honda dealer against Honda dealer.

"Because they work," Mendel replied, bluntly.

Of course, Mendel quickly modified his comments, saying he hates any objective-based incentive program and doesn't want to use them. He capped his response by comparing stair-step to heroin, a habit the industry needs to break.

Jackson leapt on the metaphor: "The addict says, 'I love my heroin dealer,' and then you die."

The roundtable audience of nearly 500 attendees, composed largely of dealers, broke into applause. Score one for Jackson.
