Week-old giant panda cub born at the National Zoo dies

The giant panda cub born a week ago at the National Zoo in Washington has died, and it was not immediately known why the animal died, zoo officials said Sunday.?

Zoo officials said in a press release that the cub was found dead Sunday morning after panda keepers heard sounds of distress from its mother, Mei Xiang.

Staffers were able to retrieve the cub about an hour later. The cub appeared to be in good condition, and there were no outward signs of trauma or infection.

The cub had been a surprise at the zoo. Fourteen-year-old Mei Xiang had five failed pregnancies before giving birth, and only one panda cub has survived at the zoo in the past.

Panda cubs are born about the size of a stick of butter and are delicate infants. Panda mothers are about 1,000 times heavier than their cubs, which are born with their eyes closed. The delicate cubs have died in the past when accidentally crushed by mom. That happened in two different zoos in China in 2009 and 2010 when mothers killed their young while attempting to nurse.

The zoo's first panda couple, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing, arrived from China in 1972 and had five cubs during the 1980s, but none lived more than a few days. One of the cubs was stillborn, two others died of pneumonia within a day, another died from lack of oxygen after birth, and the final cub died of an infection after four days.

Panda experts have said the first weeks of life are critical for the panda cubs as mothers have to make sure they stay warm and get enough to eat.

"It's kind of a nerve-racking period for the folks that are monitoring mom and cub," Rebecca Snyder, the curator of mammals at Atlanta's zoo, said last week. Atlanta is one of only two other American zoos to have had cubs.

Atlanta has had three cubs, and the San Diego zoo has had six, including a cub born this year. A panda couple in Memphis has yet to have a cub, despite several tries. No other U.S. zoos have pandas.

The cub had not yet been named in accordance with Chinese tradition ? it was to receive a name after 100 days on Dec. 24. Had the cub survived until then, it would have been roughly the size of a loaf of bread and weighed around 10 pounds.

Sheldon Principal:Hughes Will Remain Baseball Coach

Mike Hughes will be the varsity baseball coach at Sheldon High School this season, that despite a demand on the part of several of the parents that he be fired. School principal Paula Duncan made it clear that her three-week investigation into the allegations of recruiting and other impropriety brought by the parents in a letter shared with the Citizen Aug. 10 has discovered little evidence to back those claims. ?I have interviewed many students, I have looked into the allegations, I can tell you there is nothing that sustains any recruiting,? Duncan said Thursday.

In their letter, addressed to the school's athletic director, Denise Aguilar, parents claim Hughes was using his off-season tournament team, the River City Outlaws, to recruit players attending other schools to play at Sheldon. Plus, they add that Hughes was guaranteeing a spot on the varsity roster for those who played on the Outlaws.

?All the other allegations, I honestly cannot substantiate and according to the kids, it didn?t happen,? Duncan said.?

She also said that she attempted to meet in person with the parents responsible for writing the letter. ?When (Sheldon athletic director) Denise (Aguilar) offered to meet with any parent, especially those who were involved in the parents? letter, not one parent would come forward, not one,? Duncan said. ?One parent did meet with us, but it wasn?t a parent involved at all with the letter, just wanted to discuss their concern with this matter.? Duncan says she was told by Aguilar that one parent contacted refused the meeting. ?They said they didn?t want to meet,? she said. ?They said what they wrote in the letter was all they wanted to say.? The letter also charged Hughes threatened the players with being benched during the 2012 season if parents complained about their son?s playing time. ?In looking at the concerns and talking to the kids, it was never told them,? Duncan claims. ?They never had any indication that would happen. There just was nothing to indicate that ever occurred.? However, Duncan said there was one positive that came from this situation. The parents? request that booster club monies be audited resulted in tighter financial management of the money. ?(The booster club) has been extraordinarily cooperative in making some changes, even before I talked to them,? Duncan said. ?Nothing was a practice that no one else isn?t doing, but in all honesty, things could be tightened up.? The use of tobacco products by coaches, objected to by the parents, is something that Duncan says she has dealt with. ?We?re addressing that, because that is absolutely not okay,? she said.

Two parents were contacted Thursday for their reaction to Duncan's announcement. Neither would allow their names to be used, but both expressed their disappointment.

More from those parents on Saturday ....

Verizon adding suite of Amazon apps to all new Android devices

Verizon adding suite of Amazon apps to all new Android devices

Most US carriers have been pulling back on the sheer number of pre-installed apps thrown onto the latest Android devices, but Verizon appears to be heading in the opposite direction. An announcement found within the safe confines of Big Red's internal system indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Stellar wasn't the only product in the lineup to get officially introduced to a suite of Amazon apps -- every single Android device gracing Verizon's shelves will also get the same treatment. The suite includes apps for the Kindle, Shopping, MP3, IMDb, Audible and Zappos. There was no word on whether the bloatware can be disabled or uninstalled, but since the policy goes into effect today, we should find out pretty soon. We highly doubt this will be a focal point at Amazon's press event, but we won't skirt over the possibility of it getting some time on Jeff Bezos' teleprompters.

As a sidenote, Verizon mentions here that this policy excludes Google experience devices and tablets, which could be cause for speculation that new Nexus devices (including tablets) are en route to the LTE carrier. This wording is pretty open, however, and it may simply be Verizon's way of covering themselves in case such a device comes out in the future.

Spain defends austerity moves before Merkel visit

MADRID (AP) ? Spain's economy minister on Thursday defended the country's unpopular austerity measures pushed through this year by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, hours before the Spanish leader is set to receive a key visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Spain's government is under pressure to accept a sovereign bailout for its public finances that could come with conditions that would mean more economic pain for a country in a deep recession with unemployment at nearly 25 percent.

But Luis de Guindos said Spain has already made significant progress this year with labor reforms and efforts to reduce a growing deficit through tax hikes and spending cutbacks.

"Spain is doing what Germany did 10 years ago," de Guindos told a gathering of Spanish and German business leaders at the presidential palace ahead of the Rajoy-Merkel meeting.

Over the last decade, Germany has raised its retirement age, amended its constitution to require a balanced budget and put in place labor market and welfare reforms. A key round of measures in 2003 reduced job benefits and protections ? and was criticized at the time for cutting away at a cherished social welfare system.

While Rajoy and Merkel meet, the European Central Bank is expected to announce a plan to buy government bonds from countries like Spain which are struggling with high borrowing costs on their debt.

Spain has already accepted a loan of up to ?100 billion ($126 billion) to rescue its banks. But the government is struggling to pay punishingly high interest rates to raise money on bond markets. Investors are concerned that the country cannot afford to protect its financial system and its heavily indebted semiautonomous regional governments without asking for a full-blown sovereign bailout.

Before Merkel arrives, Spain will hold a bond auction that will be a test of investor sentiment.

The interest rate on Spain's benchmark 10-year bond fell to 6.35 percent Thursday morning ahead of the auction, but that level still makes it difficult for the government to finance itself. And it is close to the 7 percent rate that forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to ask for sovereign bailouts.

If you could only teach ten points, what would they be? - Ewan ...

If you were to look at your school year ahead, and choose only ten things to actually teach explicitly, what would your top ten lecturettes be?

?When we're working with teachers on our take on Design Thinking, one of the hardest concepts of change for folk to get their head around is that teachers can teach a lot less to achieve much more. In that initial "immersion" into an exploratory area, students need plenty of content made available to them, but they don't need taught it. They just need rich resource and time. Here's how some of our Brisbane Design Thinking School teachers approach that immersion stage, by trusting their students and doing their best to "get out of the way of learning":

    ?

Immersion from Danielle Carter on Vimeo.

So counter-intuitive is this point, that we normally end up referring to research that shows how much we can learn without being taught. Sugata Mitra's hole in the wall experiments in India are indicative of what can be achieved when children with no or little education, and no English, are given lots of content and time to grapple with it together. Within months, by coaching each other and playing, they become fluent not just in a new language, but also in the science or maths concepts they've been playing with:

Likewise, there's some compelling research showing how much more learning takes place when students work collectively in a team, coaching each other to create a team-based product of learning with individual accountability built in. The effect of cross-age or cross-ability coaching is equivalent to every?student, not just the one "being coached", having one-on-one teacher coaching. There is double the amount of learning, in fact, than when the teacher is leading learning from the front (evidence from Dylan Wiliam's Embedded Formative Assessment, page/reference unknown at present time).

And there are also personal stories; not highbrow, large scale research, but it makes the point powerfully, too: we don't need to have teachers teach for learners to learn:

Last year, while sitting with Sugata in a pre-keynote speakers' room, I showed him a video I had shot in the car a few months previously. It is my daughter Catriona, sitting in her seat, singing along to the Beatles. The interesting thing is that she knows all the words to the song, verbatim, having never been taught them. Not only that, but having not had a CD player in the house since she was born, and having only just got a CD player in the new car, she had never heard this music before, either. Except for the nine months she was in the womb, when we did have a CD player in the house.
