Verizon adding suite of Amazon apps to all new Android devices

Verizon adding suite of Amazon apps to all new Android devices

Most US carriers have been pulling back on the sheer number of pre-installed apps thrown onto the latest Android devices, but Verizon appears to be heading in the opposite direction. An announcement found within the safe confines of Big Red's internal system indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Stellar wasn't the only product in the lineup to get officially introduced to a suite of Amazon apps -- every single Android device gracing Verizon's shelves will also get the same treatment. The suite includes apps for the Kindle, Shopping, MP3, IMDb, Audible and Zappos. There was no word on whether the bloatware can be disabled or uninstalled, but since the policy goes into effect today, we should find out pretty soon. We highly doubt this will be a focal point at Amazon's press event, but we won't skirt over the possibility of it getting some time on Jeff Bezos' teleprompters.

As a sidenote, Verizon mentions here that this policy excludes Google experience devices and tablets, which could be cause for speculation that new Nexus devices (including tablets) are en route to the LTE carrier. This wording is pretty open, however, and it may simply be Verizon's way of covering themselves in case such a device comes out in the future.

Spain defends austerity moves before Merkel visit

MADRID (AP) ? Spain's economy minister on Thursday defended the country's unpopular austerity measures pushed through this year by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, hours before the Spanish leader is set to receive a key visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Spain's government is under pressure to accept a sovereign bailout for its public finances that could come with conditions that would mean more economic pain for a country in a deep recession with unemployment at nearly 25 percent.

But Luis de Guindos said Spain has already made significant progress this year with labor reforms and efforts to reduce a growing deficit through tax hikes and spending cutbacks.

"Spain is doing what Germany did 10 years ago," de Guindos told a gathering of Spanish and German business leaders at the presidential palace ahead of the Rajoy-Merkel meeting.

Over the last decade, Germany has raised its retirement age, amended its constitution to require a balanced budget and put in place labor market and welfare reforms. A key round of measures in 2003 reduced job benefits and protections ? and was criticized at the time for cutting away at a cherished social welfare system.

While Rajoy and Merkel meet, the European Central Bank is expected to announce a plan to buy government bonds from countries like Spain which are struggling with high borrowing costs on their debt.

Spain has already accepted a loan of up to ?100 billion ($126 billion) to rescue its banks. But the government is struggling to pay punishingly high interest rates to raise money on bond markets. Investors are concerned that the country cannot afford to protect its financial system and its heavily indebted semiautonomous regional governments without asking for a full-blown sovereign bailout.

Before Merkel arrives, Spain will hold a bond auction that will be a test of investor sentiment.

The interest rate on Spain's benchmark 10-year bond fell to 6.35 percent Thursday morning ahead of the auction, but that level still makes it difficult for the government to finance itself. And it is close to the 7 percent rate that forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to ask for sovereign bailouts.

If you could only teach ten points, what would they be? - Ewan ...

If you were to look at your school year ahead, and choose only ten things to actually teach explicitly, what would your top ten lecturettes be?

?When we're working with teachers on our take on Design Thinking, one of the hardest concepts of change for folk to get their head around is that teachers can teach a lot less to achieve much more. In that initial "immersion" into an exploratory area, students need plenty of content made available to them, but they don't need taught it. They just need rich resource and time. Here's how some of our Brisbane Design Thinking School teachers approach that immersion stage, by trusting their students and doing their best to "get out of the way of learning":

?

Immersion from Danielle Carter on Vimeo.

So counter-intuitive is this point, that we normally end up referring to research that shows how much we can learn without being taught. Sugata Mitra's hole in the wall experiments in India are indicative of what can be achieved when children with no or little education, and no English, are given lots of content and time to grapple with it together. Within months, by coaching each other and playing, they become fluent not just in a new language, but also in the science or maths concepts they've been playing with:

Likewise, there's some compelling research showing how much more learning takes place when students work collectively in a team, coaching each other to create a team-based product of learning with individual accountability built in. The effect of cross-age or cross-ability coaching is equivalent to every?student, not just the one "being coached", having one-on-one teacher coaching. There is double the amount of learning, in fact, than when the teacher is leading learning from the front (evidence from Dylan Wiliam's Embedded Formative Assessment, page/reference unknown at present time).

And there are also personal stories; not highbrow, large scale research, but it makes the point powerfully, too: we don't need to have teachers teach for learners to learn:

Last year, while sitting with Sugata in a pre-keynote speakers' room, I showed him a video I had shot in the car a few months previously. It is my daughter Catriona, sitting in her seat, singing along to the Beatles. The interesting thing is that she knows all the words to the song, verbatim, having never been taught them. Not only that, but having not had a CD player in the house since she was born, and having only just got a CD player in the new car, she had never heard this music before, either. Except for the nine months she was in the womb, when we did have a CD player in the house.

Home ? How to Get Results From Your List Building Efforts

Doing business on the web gives you so many different methods, but how well you are able to execute them will be what makes the difference.

Tons of people get involved with pipjet, and you can analyze that very quickly and see what we are talking about. There is also no surprise that any marketing method will produce widely different results.

If you are extremely confident you are doing everything right, then how about testing that and getting a more experienced opinion? Everything you will ever do in business does not exist in isolation and draws from different directions.

The first time you go live with anything, you will not be operating efficiently; hence the critical importance of testing all you ever roll out onto the net.

List building is nothing new; it has been around for a long time now. The only thing that?s changed is the number of places where lists can be built now, such as Facebook and Twitter. Building an email list, though, is still the simplest and probably the most effective way to get an increasing amount of traffic to your offers. Your list will start off with just a few subscribers, but as it grows your business grows along with it. There are many tricks you can use to make list building easier, and we?ll be sharing a few of our favorites in this article.

While it?s understandable that you want to build your list fast, don?t try to rush the process too much. If you?re just starting your list today, don?t expect to have thousands of subscribers by tomorrow. There are several steps to learn, and at first the process can be slow. You can build a modest sized list fairly fast, but a really big one takes longer. There are quite a few things to learn, and then you have to apply what you?ve learned consistently.

Everything counts, from the appearance of your opt-in form to what you offer people to make them want to sign up for your list. Of course we all know fapturbo review has been around for quite some time, and it has an impressive record for bringing in additional revenue. While that is not exactly a revelation to some, there are still very many out there who simply do not know it. One answer to this perpetual problem has been marketing forums because you can get acquainted with people who are doing the same things as you. All we have time and space for are cursory overviews of the various methods and points we discuss. Our articles normally present a small number of related points to a main topic, but we will never begin to give you all that is available on any one particular topic or subject. Be sure that you avoid requesting too much from people so they can optin. You will turn people off right away by putting too many fields in the optin box. Never ask people for their last name, and even the first name can be too much for some. If you can get greater conversions, then why not just ask for their email and nothing more than that. This will allow you to automatically increase your conversion by a few notches, with the same amount of traffic.

Getting subscribers is only the first step in list building; you also have to know how to keep them. You can?t just add subscribers to your list and keep quiet. Come up with as many ways as possible to make your list valuable. Consider what their needs are and do what you can to provide them with assistance. Request feedback from your subscribers and give them any help you can. Having a list is a serious responsibility, and you have to stay on top of things all the time. If you want a reliable source of traffic, you should build a list.

Building a list is an effective way to help you make any type of online business more profitable. Be patient, and recognize that building a high quality list is a gradual process.

You need a well targeted offer, such as a free gift or an informative newsletter to get people on your list. List building is one of the most important activities you can focus on if you want your online business to be successful.

We realize that sometimes it feels like you are treading water and all you can do is keep your nose above it. Since these articles are short, and really meant to provide introductory information about million dollar pips, it is well-advised that you learn more. Regardless of the technique, augmenting it with additional knowledge will only increase your ability to use it more effectively.

Avoid the trap of staying in book learning mode and constantly moving from one thing to the next.

It is not as hard as it may seem, and all you need to do is start doing one thing each day until it becomes a routine.

We like to say that business means action, and nothing was ever accomplished without action.

MyVoucherCodes Adds Restaurant Booking Functionality To Its Mobile App, Powered By Toptable

Screen Shot 2012-09-03 at 12.32.46In a move that seems like a bit of a no-brainer, but for which the company is claiming a UK first: MyVoucherCodes has added the ability to make a restaurant booking from within its location-based 'money saving' smartphone app. That's right, cashing in on those local discounts and promotions just got a lot easier, as has the ability for the 500 or so participating restaurants to generate additional bookings. MyVoucherCodes isn't saying officially who is powering the app's new table booking functionality, although TechCrunch has learned that it comes via a partnership with OpenTable-owned Toptable.

(AP Photo/Ashwini Bhatia, File)

LONDON (AP) ? Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu called Sunday for Tony Blair and George Bush to face prosecution at the International Criminal Court for their role in the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq

Tutu, the retired Anglican Church's archbishop of South Africa, wrote in an op-ed piece for The Observer newspaper that the ex-leaders of Britain and the United States should be made to "answer for their actions."

The Iraq war "has destabilized and polarized the world to a greater extent than any other conflict in history," wrote Tutu, who was awarded the Nobel prize in 1984.

"Those responsible for this suffering and loss of life should be treading the same path as some of their African and Asian peers who have been made to answer for their actions in the Hague," he added.

The Hague, Netherlands, based court is the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal and has been in operation for 10 years. So far it has launched prosecutions only in Africa, including in Sudan, Congo, Libya and Ivory Coast.

Tutu has long been a staunch critic of the Iraq war, while others opposed to the conflict ? including playwright Harold Pinter ? have previously called for Bush and Blair to face prosecution at the Hague.

"The then-leaders of the U.S. and U.K. fabricated the grounds to behave like playground bullies and drive us further apart. They have driven us to the edge of a precipice where we now stand ? with the specter of Syria and Iran before us," said Tutu, who last week withdrew from a conference in South Africa due to Blair's presence at the event.

While the International Criminal Court can handle cases of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, it does not currently have the jurisdiction to prosecute crimes of aggression. Any potential prosecution over the Iraq war would likely come under the aggression category.

The U.S. is among nations which do not recognize the International Criminal Court.

In response to Tutu, Blair said he had great respect for the archbishop's work to tackle apartheid in South Africa, but accused him of repeating inaccurate criticisms of the Iraq war.

"To repeat the old canard that we lied about the intelligence is completely wrong as every single independent analysis of the evidence has shown," Blair said. "And to say that the fact that Saddam (deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein) massacred hundreds of thousands of his citizens is irrelevant to the morality of removing him is bizarre."

However, Blair said that "in a healthy democracy people can agree to disagree."

In Britain, a two-year long inquiry examining the buildup to the Iraq war and its conduct is yet to publish its final report. The panel took evidence from political leaders including Blair, military chiefs and intelligence officers. Two previous British studies into aspects of the war cleared Blair's government of wrongdoing.

The Iraq war was bitterly divisive in the U.K. and saw large public demonstrations. However, Blair subsequently won a 2005 national election, though with a reduced majority.
