Safety Eyewear Can Prevent Sports Injuries in Kids - - Health.com
SUNDAY, Aug. 12 (HealthDay News) ? The start of training for school sports can bring a surge of sports-related eye injuries among young athletes, even though it?s possible to prevent such injuries, an expert says.
?As training season begins, and as children resume practice, emergency rooms across the country may see an influx of eye injuries from sports ? yet most of these injuries are highly preventable by wearing protective goggles,? pediatric ophthalmologist Dr. Michael Repka, of the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute and deputy director of ophthalmology at Hopkins Children?s Center, said in a Hopkins news release.
Nine out of 10 such injuries can be prevented by using safety eyewear consistently, according to the release.
Pediatricians should educate parents, young athletes and coaches about the dangers of eye injuries and encourage the use of eye protection, especially for high-risk sports such as baseball, softball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer and fencing, Repka advised.
Mild injuries such as eyelid bruises and corneal abrasions usually cause no long-term damage, but serious injuries can have lasting effects. High-impact injuries can lead to internal bleeding or fracture the bone around the eye, which may require surgery, the release noted.
Parents should seek immediate medical attention for their child if the child has any of these eye problems: cuts or punctures; redness, itching or irritation; discharge or excessive tearing; swelling of the eye or surrounding area; deep pain, pain behind the eyes or unexplained headaches; floaters or flashes in the field of vision, or partial loss of vision.
?Eye injuries at an early age can have serious and life-long consequences for the young athlete that go beyond missing a game or two and can sometimes lead to permanent eye damage and loss of vision,? Repka said.
August is Children?s Eye Health and Safety Month.
Eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children in the United States and most eye injuries in school-age children are sports-related, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. About 100,000 sports-related eye injuries occur each year in the United States, and children account for nearly half those cases.

AP source: Romney picks Ryan for running mate
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan to be his running mate, according to a Republican with knowledge of the development. The newly minted GOP ticket will appear together Saturday in Norfolk, Va., at the start of a four-state bus tour to introduce the GOP ticket to the nation.
The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because this person was not authorized to disclose the decision.
In a statement issued Friday night, Romney's campaign would say only that the running mate would be revealed at 9 a.m. EDT at the Nauticus Museum. Berthed at the museum is the USS Wisconsin ? which offered a hint about Romney's choice.
In the final hours before Romney's team issued the statement, all signs seemed to point to Ryan, the seven-term Wisconsin congressman whose nomination could help assuage the conservative base of the party that has been reluctant to fully embrace Romney.

Southold?s new pooper-scooper law may conform with federal stormwater discharge regulations, but it?s not sitting nicely with equestrians in town.
The expanded pooper-scooper law, adopted this April, requires residents to clean up the waste of cats, horses, swine, donkeys and goats in addition to dogs.
The East End Livestock and Horseman?s Association is bristling at the regulation, and not just because of the logistical possibility of having to follow after their horses on trails with wheelbarrows and shovels.
The group?s president, Samantha Perry, told the Town Board last Tuesday that she?s concerned about the slippery slope produced when animals that have always been considered livestock are suddenly legally classified as domestic pets.
She said if laws begin to define horses as pets instead of livestock, it could limit the amount of USDA funding for horse diseases, could change the tax classifications for people who have working horses on their farms, could change animal cruelty laws and could limit federal and state funding for working animals.
?Southold is a small town, but this sets the tone for bigger areas,? she said.
Town Supervisor Scott Russell said he?s not sure how classifying horses as pets could be detrimental to their owners. He added that the pooper-scooper law only governs horse owners? activities on publicly owned lands, not in agricultural districts, where the legal definitions of horses as livestock are set by state Agriculture and Markets law.
Ms. Perry said in an interview later that she?s concerned about safety issues associated with cleaning up after horses on trails, including extra dismounts, the possibility that horses will run away while their riders are cleaning up after them, not to mention the sheer weight of their waste and the utensils needed to pick it up.
She said more than 80 percent of horse manure is water, causing the manure to break down significantly just one day after it lands on the trail. She added that horses also evacuate while walking, making it difficult for riders to know when there?s a steaming horse pile in their wake.
Mr. Russell has agreed to meet with horse owners to iron out potential changes to the language in the law.
?We didn?t pass this legislation because we perceived a problem,? he said. ?It wasn?t because we thought we had a bunch of irresponsible horse owners running around.?
