Travel photo of the day: Snorkeling in the Bahamas

Submitted by Jean Chisser / UGC

Snorkeling off the Exuma Islands in the Bahamas.

Jean Chisser and her husband spent part of March snorkeling off the Exuma islands in the Bahamas. On the second day of their trip, the couple happened upon Pirate Trap beach, where they found a great snorkeling spot as well as a beautiful beach.

"The day was one of those 'perfect' days (like most in the Exumas) with blue skies and white puffy clouds," Chisser told TODAY.com. "The sun was still pretty high in the sky and helped make the beautiful aqua water shine."

Chisser used a fish-eye lens to curve the image of her husband, Skip, snorkeling.?

Chisser is a semi-professional photographer, and more of her photos are featured on her website.

Exclusive look: 'Mama's Boys' want to be babied

By Anna Chan

The special bond between mother and son is a beautiful thing. When the little guy is young, he gets plenty of love, good advice, delicious meals and maybe even a maid of sorts from Mom while living at home.?

But eventually, it comes time to fly the coop -- unless he's one of the 30-something men who prefers to stay at home and be babied in adulthood?on TLC's new series "Mama's Boys of the Bronx."

The eight-part series takes a look at the lives of five Italian-American men -- Anthony, Frankie, Giovanni, Peter and Chip -- who all live happily at home with their mothers and have no plans to leave. (Yes, they're all employed.)?

And why should they? The mothers -- who, despite wanting to see their sons marry "good Italian girls" -- ?love having the boys around and even do their laundry, cook for them, clean for them, shop for them and of course, nag them.

Take 38-year-old Giovanni, for example. He moved in with his Aunt Gina after his mother passed away not long ago. In an exclusive sneak peek TLC shared with TODAY.com, the aspiring fashion designer takes some ribbing from his aunt after he turns away her delicious homemade raviolis.?

"Giovan, you know where you gotta lose weight?" Gina snaps. "Your nose! You got a #$&%*^% vacuum cleaner over there! And what time you coming home? You eat no ravioli, you got no ass, and that's it! At least my pants stay up."

Yes, even with all that, Giovanni prefers to live at home. (That must be some amazing ravioli.)?

Check out our exclusive clip:

?

The series premieres at 10 p.m., Monday, April 9 on TLC.

Think the guys will be able to find "good Italian girls" to marry after their lives are featured on the show? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

In Tulsa, a community steps up after shootings

There is new evidence this morning that a shooting spree in Oklahoma may have been motivated by hate after one of the suspects was found to have posted racially charged comments on his Facebook page. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

By Isolde Raftery, msnbc.com

On Friday morning, the residents of Tulsa?s predominantly black north side woke to mayhem: Five people had been shot in their neighborhood, apparently at random. Three were dead. The shooters, they learned, were at large.

They feared leaving their homes and worried they couldn?t make it to church on Easter Sunday. Witnesses hesitated to call police, anxious they would be called snitches.

Tulsa police Maj. Walter Evans was charged with forming a task force to track down the shooters. He appealed to the press, asking them to spread the word that the police department had opened a Crime Stoppers tip line. Nearly 40 tips came in.

?In my 23 years I?ve never seen a crime as heinous as this, but I?ve also never seen such an outpouring of support from the community,? Evans said later.

One Tulsa shooting suspect posted racist remark on Facebook

Police learned of a young man named Jake England, a 19-year-old whose father had been killed two years before, almost to the day. Carl England had been shot by an African-American man during a scuffle, and England, it appeared from a posting Thursday on his Facebook wall, had an ax to grind.

?Today is two years that my dad has been gone shot by a?f------ n----- it's hard not to go off between that and sheran I'm gone in the head,? he wrote, according to the Tulsa World. ??

Sheran was Sheran Hart Wilde, England?s fianc?e, who killed herself in January. Susan Sevenstar, an England family friend, told the Associated Press that the couple had an infant and that England wasn?t in his right mind.

His roommate, a 32-year-old man named Alvin Lee Watts who liked to take shirtless photos of himself, replied to England's post: ?I kno i miss them 2. My last meomeries were great ones of them. Its nt goodbye its c u later.? Watts was recently single, according to his posts on the social network site, and frustrated by people he described as ?haterz.?

Watts and England were roommates, and Watts, it appeared on Facebook, had supported England as he grieved. In one post, Watts wrote, ?Me n my bro jake jus chill?in. jake putting lil jake 2 sleep. Watch?in country videos.?

On Thursday night and into the early hours of Friday, police allege that the two men hit the streets of north Tulsa in a white Chevrolet pickup with a loud exhaust. Witnesses told police that a white man in the truck stopped pedestrians for directions and then shot them in the back as they walked away. It is unclear who pulled the trigger.

Their victims, identified as Dannaer Fields, 49, Bobby Clark, 54, and William Allen, 31, were black.

That night, England returned to Facebook: ?Chilling at that house people talking s--- on me for some s--- I didn't do ... it just mite be the time to call it quits I I hate to say it like that but I'm done if something does happen tonite be ready for another funeral later.?

By Saturday afternoon, the police were desperate for leads. They asked the press to spread the word that they were opening a Crime Stoppers hot line. Within two hours, the tips flooded in. Maj. Evans set up Operation Random Shooter.

They recovered a weapon and found England?s burned pickup 10 miles from his home. Within hours, one tipster pointed them to the suspects.

Tulsa police Chief Chuck Jordan said a helicopter tracked them to a house in Turley, Okla., a city of 3,000 people north of Tulsa, where they were arrested. They are being held on three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

When Council Member Jack Henderson, who represents north Tulsa, got the call about their arrests, he dropped to his knees to pray. ?Thank God,? he said. He said he believes the police department has proved itself to the black community, and that his constituents may start coming forward with tips to solve dormant cases.

Neither Watts or England has previously been?convicted of a serious crime. Court records show that Watts was charged in 2009 with aggravated assault and battery, but those charges were dismissed. In 2006, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for domestic violence. He paid a $649.90 court fine.

England has been charged once, for driving with a suspended license. ?

Now the investigation turns to whether Watts and England should be charged with hate crimes.

?If we did have a case, if someone was obviously engaged in a hate crime, we need to show the community that?s what we charge them for,? Chief Jordan said.

But Sevenstar, the England family friend, insisted to the AP that this was not a hate crime, adding that England was Cherokee Indian.

"He didn't care what your color was,? she said. ?It wasn't a racist thing.?

Sony to axe 10,000 jobs worldwide: report

By Agence France-Presse
Monday, April 9, 2012 4:44 EDT

?

Sony will cut 10,000 jobs worldwide this year as it attempts to carry out sweeping reforms aimed at reviving the iconic but loss-making Japanese electronics giant, the Nikkei business daily said Monday.

About half the planned job cuts are part of a restructuring of Sony?s chemical unit as well as operations tied to its small and medium-sized liquid crystal display panels, the Nikkei said in its online edition.

The company?s top seven executives, including its outgoing chief, would also give up their annual bonus, it added without citing sources.

The report did not give further details of the reductions from Sony?s headcount which stood at about 168,000 employees as of March last year.

The report comes after Sony shed its Welsh-born US chief executive Howard Stringer ? replaced by his protege Kazuo Hirai ? and said it expected to lose a whopping 220 billion yen ($2.7 billion) by March for a fourth consecutive year in the red.

A spokesman for Sony, known for its Walkman music players and PlayStation game consoles, declined to comment on the report.

Sony?s new chief is due to hold a press conference later this week.

The report came less than a month after the struggling company announced the sale of its chemical division to the Development Bank of Japan, saying the unit did not fit with its restructuring plans.

The division, which has several thousand employees, accounts for only a small fraction of Sony sales, but the move was widely seen as the first of many changes aimed at reshaping the company.

Industry analysts have said Sony must usher in major reforms amid fierce overseas competition and continuing losses at its mainstay television business. It still generates substantial profits from electronics parts.

Sony has blamed tough competition, falling prices, slow demand, the impact of severe flooding in Thailand last year, and the high yen for its weak balance sheet.

Credit rating agencies Moody?s and Standard & Poor?s both downgraded Sony earlier this year, citing its struggle with the TV operation, among other factors.

During an earlier restructuring announced in December 2008 amid the global financial crisis, Sony cut about 16,000 jobs worldwide.

Sony is not unique among Japan?s electronics giants with industry leader Panasonic replacing its president amid a massive loss forecast while Sharp is also reshuffling its executive line-up.

Mariners in Texas, Where Bad Happens

The FIRST-PLACE Seattle Mariners (3-1), led by MVP candidate Chone Figgins (after four games, anyway), take their moveable feast to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington Monday for the start of a four-game series against Texas, winner of consecutive American League pennants and a club that dominated Seattle for two years.

The Rangers defeated the Mariners 15 times in 19 meetings in 2011, including nine of 10 games in Arlington, cumulatively outscoring Seattle, 95-53. In 2010, the Rangers beat Seattle 12 of 19, by a combined score of 101-51. In the past 38 games between the two, Texas has won 27 and outscored Seattle 196-104.

If Seattle can sustain against Texas what it started last week against Oakland, the Mariners might be able to change their negative dynamic against the Rangers. The Mariners produced 15 runs vs. the A's on an astonishing (for them, given their feebleness of recent seasons) 26 hits in taking a pair, 7-3 and 8-7.

But Texas will throw a trio of pitchers at Seattle this week that went a combined 6-1, 2.88 ERA vs. the Mariners last year and have a combined career mark of 13-5, 3.10 against them.

The Rangers open the four-game set with Japanese import Yu Darvish, on whom the Rangers spent more money ($110 million in posting fees and contract value) to acquire last winter than Texas club president Nolan Ryan made in his own 27-year pitching career (1975-93), $25.7 million.

Darvish, making his major league debut, compiled a record of 72-28 with a 1.72 ERA in five years (2007-11) with Nippon Ham. He is a two-time Pacific League Most Valuable Player (2007, 2009), a three-time league strikeout champion (2007, 2010-11), a two-time ERA champion (2009-10) and a two-time Gold Glove winner (2007-08).

Darvish will oppose Hector Noesi, who will make his first start as a Mariner and only the third of his major league career.

Converted reliever Neftali Feliz, who opposes Blake Beavan Tuesday, has faced 14 of the 25 players on Seattle's roster. Those 14 are a combined 0-for-28, 0.00 ERA against him. The only Mariner with any success against Feliz: Alex Liddi, who has walked twice.

The Mariners will contest?Colby Lewis Wednesday. Lewis, who will be matched opposite former Ranger Kevin Millwood,?went 2-1, 3.63 in four starts against Seattle last year and is 6-4, 3.70 against them in his career. Don't expect much out of Seattle catcher Miguel Olivo here: he's 0-for-14 with six strikeouts against Lewis. On the other hand, Ichiro (.375) and Figgins (.313) have a record of banging Lewis around.

Thursday's Texas starter, Derek Holland, went 3-0, 2.77 in four starts against Seattle in 2011, whiffing 27 in 26 innings. Holland is 5-1, 3.17 in six career starts against the Mariners. Holland will match pitches with Jason Vargas (1-0), who defeated the A's? Friday.

With a 3-1 start, and a .410 batting average with runners in scoring position, the Mariners have a chance at their first winning April since 2009 (13-9 last year) and just their second in the past eight seasons.

If 2012 isn't going to be, as Sportspress Northwest columnist Art Thiel pointed out in a post last week, a 162-game battle with the Athletics for third place in the AL West, the Texas series is significant in terms of the Mariners sustaining their quality start.

At this time of year, many managers -- Lou Piniella especially comes to mind -- are fond of saying, particularly if their clubs stumble out of the gate,? "it's early yet," suggesting there is a lot of baseball still to be played, and that even a ship listing severely in April can be righted.

Sure, it happens, but not often. In fact, in their own case, the Mariners not only put the lie to this, they stand as nearly perfect examples of what happens to teams, especially in the AL West, that get off to bad starts.

Since 1994, when baseball created three divisions, 36 editions of the Mariners,?Angels, Rangers and Athletics have combined for losing records in March/April. ?We are not counting April of 1995, when the season did not commence until the end of that month due to the previous season's player strike (each AL West club played only a handful of April games that year).

Of the 36 losing March/Aprils suffered by the four AL West entries, 27 resulted in losing seasons.

Since 1994, April has been the most indicative month as to how the Mariners are going to perform throughout the season. Consider:

  • 7: The number of times (again, since 1994) that the Mariners have posted a winning record in March/April.
  • 7: The number of times that the Mariners finished with a winning record after having a winning March/April.
  • 8: The number of times the Mariners had a losing March/April.
  • 0: The number of times the Mariners recovered to post a winning record after a losing March/April.
In the AL West, the Athletics and Angels have each had four losing March/Aprils, but rebounded to end the season above .500. Oakland had the most remarkable turnaround, going 8-17 in March/April of 2001, but finishing with 102 victories compared to Seattle's record 116.

The following are the only AL West clubs that started out losing in March/April, and then finished with a winning seasonal record. Note that of the nine teams that recovered to end on a positive note, only three wound up in the postseason, and only two got past the American League Division Series.

YearTeamAprilSeasonPostseason
1999Angels10-1487-75Failed to make playoffs

2009Rangers10-1187-75Failed to make playoffs
2010Rangers11-1290-72Lost World Series to SF
A little recent history upon which to chew: The 2011 Mariners, like the 2012 edition, started the season on a positive note, taking two of three from the Athletics in Oakland. The Mariners then went to Texas for a three-game series and lost all by a combined margin of 16-7.

That launched a seven-game losing streak, which turned into a 13-15 April, which precipitated a 67-95 record, and the club's sixth last-place finish in eight years.
