Saying the party has ?zero tolerance? for voter fraud, the GOP also filed complaints against the company with the Florida Secretary of State?s office. The company, run by long-time GOP operative Nathan Sproul, says a single employee was responsible for the forged signatures, though the problem, by Friday, had spread to 10 counties.

"This is an issue we take extremely seriously," RNC spokesman Sean Spicer told CBS News. "When allegations were brought to our attention we severed all ties to the firm."

While reasonable, those explanations could have trouble finding traction among the US electorate, which has watched battles erupt in mostly swing states from Florida to Ohio over control of voter rolls, and heated debates about potential disenfranchisement of key Democratic constituencies, poorer, minority, and elderly voters.

Why do Election 2012 swing states matter? 5 resources to explain.

The allegations are particularly poignant in Florida, which decided the presidential race in 2000 after a massive recount was halted by the US Supreme Court in a way that gave the election to the GOP, and where the current Republican state administration has fought with the US Department of Justice over an effort to weed out illegal immigrants from the state?s voter rolls.

Even more to the point of third-party voter registration contractors, the League of Women Voters sued Florida earlier this month after it instituted a new 48-hour deadline for turning in registration forms. The state relented, reinstating a 10-day deadline.

What?s more, the fraudulent registration findings have echoes of the 2008 controversies over the now-disbanded ACORN community activism group, which was accused by Republicans in 2008 of falsifying forms.

Brad Friedman, who runs the electoral watchdog Brad Blog, helped break the story, tying it to other emerging GOP registration controversies in California and Colorado. Other states where Sproul?s firm had been hired to gather registrations have not reported any problems.

?A massive GOP voter registration scheme, which appears to involve the upper-echelons of the national party, [has begun] to emerge,? Mr. Friedman writes.

(AP) ? With disgraced politician Bo Xilai expelled from the party, his career effectively ended with a slew of criminal charges that are certain to result in convictions, China's ruling communists can finally focus on the crucial task of ensuring a smooth transition to a new generation of leaders.

On Friday, the party's decision-making Politburo finally took long-awaited action on the scandal that had loomed over Chinese politics for more than half a year, leveling criminal charges against Bo that range from corruption to sexual affairs to abetting the cover-up of a murder by his wife. At the same time, the 25-member Politburo also made the long overdue announcement of the opening of the party congress, now scheduled for Nov. 8, when President Hu Jintao will step down as party boss and Vice President Xi Jinping will succeed him.

The twin pronouncements are connected: Getting Bo out of the way was seen as crucial to healing rifts in the party and allowing Xi and a new leadership to come to power without the overhang of a messy scandal.

"Having settled this contentious issue, the party leadership is in a position to start the party congress with a facade of unity and also harmony," said Willy Lam, a political analyst at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Friday's announcement also came on the eve of National Day, which commemorates Mao Zedong's Oct. 1, 1949, declaration of victory in the country's civil war and the dawn of the People's Republic of China. Despite China's explosive economic growth and breakneck modernization since then, the events surrounding Bo's fall from grace show Mao's party remains very much the opaque and powerful force in Chinese political life.

"Again, this is politics overriding legal and judicial principles," Lam said, noting that the decision came from the Politburo convening behind closed doors instead of judges in an open court.

"The elite politics are still done" in secrecy, Lam said.

One of China's most ambitious and best-known politicians, Bo was brought down after a trusted aide disclosed that Bo's wife had murdered a British businessman. Bo was dismissed as party chief of the vibrant inland megacity of Chongqing; his wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence after confessing to the murder; and the aide, Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, received a 15-year prison term for initially covering up the murder and other misdeeds.

The charges against Bo, however, go much further, spanning more than a decade and including allegations that he took bribes, abused his power and had improper relationships with several women. Given the party's control of the courts, the indictment ensures the flamboyant 63-year-old's political career is finished.

The criminal proceedings against Bo are likely to start soon, with steps being taken to remove him from the National People's Congress, China's top legislature. Delegates to that body have immunity from arrest and prosecution.

As the son of a founding father of communist China, Bo grew up with a broad web of contacts within the party, government and military. Unlike most of the other members of the stiff and remote senior leadership, the telegenic Bo also was popular with the public, using a crackdown on organized crime in Chongqing to court publicity.

That also made him a polarizing figure among the party elite. In recent months, as speculation swirled about Bo's fate and the debate among top leaders dragged on, it is likely that his allies argued for the administrative equivalent of a slap on the wrist, while the top leadership represented by Hu, Vice President Xi and Premier Wen Jiabao saw Bo as a threat that needed to be eliminated.

The decision to level such a harsh punishment is a sign that the top leaders won out, once again, said Jeremy Paltiel, an expert on Chinese politics at Canada's Carleton University.

"My guess is that Hu and Wen wanted to crush Bo, not just smother him," Paltiel said. "They got their wish, even at the cost of a month's delay in the congress."

The state-run Global Times said in an editorial Saturday that it is in the people's fundamental interest for the party congress to convene smoothly and that the decisions about Bo provide certainty.

"It is conducive to the current situation and also to the accumulation of political certainty," the editorial read.

Bo is the first Politburo member to be purged and handed over to prosecutors since Hu ousted Shanghai party secretary Chen Liangyu in 2006 for corruption. Bo's case, however, was more politically divisive and delicate than Chen's, or any other recent case in which senior officials have been charged with corruption.

Ultimately, the decision on Bo was part of the overall horse-trading relating to the succession, said Steve Tsang, director of the China Policy Institute at the University of Nottingham in Britain.

"It probably means that as a result they negotiated something else that is better for the leadership succession," Tsang said.

Bo's removal is seen as strengthening Xi's position, leaving him the undisputed leader of the party's "princelings," as the offspring of high-ranking communist elders are known, and eliminating a challenger who had threatened party unity. He may face some opposition from Bo's supporters among party hard-liners, but Friday's announcement shows his influence was waning fast.

Friday's closed-door Politburo meeting also likely finalized other arrangements for the congress, including the much-contested lineup for the new leadership as well as for a commission that oversees the party's control of the military. Those decisions will be presented to the 204-member Central Committee ? a cross-section of the nation's political elite ? on Nov. 1 before being discussed a week later at the congress, which is a largely ceremonial event, approving decisions made earlier by the party's inner circle.

In trying to use the Bo case to rally the rank-and-file, the Politburo said Friday that bringing down such a high-level leader was proof of the party's determination to tackle the corruption that has damaged public confidence.

"Investigations must be thorough, firm and make no appeasement, no matter who is involved and how powerful they are, so no corrupt member will escape the punishment of party discipline and the nation's law," it said.

How To Teach Creative Writing To Young Children - A Teacher's Idea

Teaching children to write?creatively is not something that you can complete at any one particular grade level. It involves a series of planned situations and activities that gradually lead to independent writing. From as early as preschool a child's writing begins to take shape as he learns to interpret print. As he grows his understanding of that print is translated into a greater command of the language. Essentially, as he progresses through the grade levels his writing unfolds as a more personal stamp.

As a teacher my goal is to develop the writing skills?of my students. This means that I must slowly direct each child to writing independently. To do so I must model good writing, write with them collaboratively, guide their efforts and allow them to work on their own. These stages are summed up under the following headings:

  1. Modeled Writing
  2. Shared Writing
  3. Guided Writing
  4. Independent Writing

1. Modeled Writing

In this initial step I must demonstrate to my students that writing is the capturing of thoughts. As I think aloud I record what I actually want to say. Of course, conventions of spelling and grammar are very important, but these can be overlooked only to facilitate the free flow of ideas. Also it is rather helpful to students to generate a list of needed words on the chalkboard. As I model good writing behaviors I direct their focus on the importance of thinking through what I want to say.

Shared Writing allows the students to contribute ideas to create one piece with the assistance of the teacher as scribe. This allows them to view the behavior of writers during the writing process.

3. Guided Writing

In guided writing the teacher continually provides feedback to students to monitor the writing process. As students write the teacher asks questions that provoke thought and generate ideas. The teacher may look at writing conventions and word choice of students or even the completeness of ideas expressed. This guidance is what makes students become better writers!

Students are provided with frequent opportunities to write independently. They experiment with language and tweak their writing skills to resemble good writers. As students write on their own they learn how to edit their drafts in an effort to create a polished piece.?

'Won't Back Down' movie review: Education drama is the latest to ...

Viola Davis, left, and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in the education drama 'Won't Back Down.' (Photo by Twentieth Century Fox)

Midway through the movie "Won't Back Down," a beleaguered official in the teachers union turns to her boss in exasperated wonder. "When," she asks, "did Norma Rae become the bad guy?"

Maybe it's time that woman read something besides The Nation.

Unions have been growing in infamy in some Americans' eyes for years (even as they've been shrinking in membership). And no group has come under stronger attack than the teachers unions. "Won't Back Down" isn't likely to give them any cover.

Set in Pittsburgh, the film is built around a version of the so-called "trigger law" in which, if a majority of parents agree, a failing school can be taken over, revamped, restaffed or even turned into a charter school.

And, in the movie, single mother Maggie Gyllenhaal and frustrated teacher Viola Davis do just that, wresting a crumbling edifice away from a corrupt principal and a few do-nothing teachers.

The movie already has come under scrutiny from some teachers groups who have called the film slanted. They're right.

In the script, the union boss is a hissable villain, the only truly pro-union teacher a lazy joke, socio-economic factors dismissed and Occupy Wall Street put down as something only complainers who aren't "working two jobs" have time for.

It also, by the way, fictionalizes the "trigger law," first adopted in California, as something that teachers have to sign on to, too. In fact, there is no such requirement (although that rewrite allows the script to pretend this is a broad-based, unifying revolt).

So, yes, the movie has a conservative point of view. Just as many, many more Hollywood films -- with their reflexive distrust of big business and dislike of religious orthodoxy -- have a liberal one. Almost every movie, consciously or not, reflects the hopes and assumptions of the people making them.

The real question is, ultimately, are the movies art -- in which there's room for conflicting ideas and three-dimensional characters? Or are they propaganda, in which thoughts are reduced to slogans, and people to a simple image that can be printed on a poster?

And that's where "Won't Back Down" falls short.

Every school board member here is a fat cat; every union official a self-interested sneak; every parent a responsible, salt-of-the-earth, blue-collar worker; every child willing to learn. Real-life factors in education -- such as drugs or crime or abusive homes -- don't count at all.

The supporting characters are all cardboard cut-outs and clich?s; Oscar Isaac, who plays a dedicated teacher (and a rather forced love interest for Gyllenhaal), isn't a man but a type, meant to represent na?ve young idealists who only think they're pro-union.

Davis, who has never put a foot wrong on stage or on screen, invests an awful lot of drama in her thinly drawn character, and Gyllenhaal is almost impossibly charming as the plucky single mom, fighting for respect even as she sees people smirking at her malapropisms and ill-fitting clothes. Even when the details of their lives feel unbelievable, these actresses compel our faith and keep us watching.

And even when the film works too hard to tell us how to feel with overdone music and cartoon characters, there are some powerful moments here, from the images of failing children to those of frustrated parents.

But "Won't Back Down" is propaganda, nonetheless. And while so was "Norma Rae," at least that story was a movie first -- and a call to arms only second.

Note: Newhouse News Service movie critic Stephen Whitty wrote this review.

___________

WON'T BACK DOWN
2 stars, out of 5

Snapshot: A drama, based on real events, about a frustrated teacher and a dedicated parent who join forces to turn around a failing school.

What works: Viola Davis, as always, turns in a strong performance, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, as always, is impossibly charming.

What doesn't: The film's pro-charter, anti-union agenda is, at times, so obvious that the insistently didactic moments only undercut the more interesting dramatic ones.

Starring: Gyllenhaal, Davis, Holly Hunter, Rosie Perez. Director: Daniel Barnz. Rating: PG, for thematic elements and language. Running time: 2 hours. Where: Find New Orleans showtimes.

Starting a Family Blog : The Village Family Magazine

In 2011,?when Melissa Cook?s son, Jaxon, was 18 months old, and she was pregnant with her daughter, the Bemidji, Minn., mom realized she needed an easy way to update her friends and family?many of whom lived half a world away?on her family?s adventures in Vojens, Denmark.

Cook?s husband, Brendan, is a professional hockey player and played with a team in Denmark last year. This year the family is headed to Germany for the season.

Cook, 31, didn?t want to use Facebook for updates because it seemed impersonal and didn?t paint a picture of their family?s experience. She shied away from Flickr for her photos because her story was more than a photo stream. Her solution: create a blog that allowed her to share her adventures with relatives and friends.

A blog?short for ?Web log??is an online personal journal hosted on a website on which an individual or group of users record opinions, information, etc., on a regular basis. The blog can feature personal information about interests and hobbies.

Cook?s friends and family members love her blog, aptly named ?Another Place Called Home? due to her effort to cultivate a home no matter where her family travels.

?I want my children to know that they?re home wherever we live. As long as the four of us are together, we?re home,? she says.

How to Start a Free Family Blog

Creating a family blog is a fantastic project for the whole family. One advocate of family blogging called it an ?evolving keepsake.?? Blogs are great places to share family milestones, your kids? achievements, fun photos, and artwork. All you need is a computer, an email address, and an Internet connection to get started. If you don?t have a computer at home, a public library is a great place to access one.

STEP 1: Choosing a Platform

Cook chose to use WordPress.com for her blog, which currently has the largest number of users and the greatest variety of themes for displaying blogs. In addition to WordPress, other popular blogging platforms include
Blogger.com, which is owned by Google. Blogger.com is very easy to use but has fewer themes to display words and pictures. For those who?d like to share fewer words, Tumblr.com is a good choice to display pictures and graphic art. All of the platforms have social networking features that allow you to share blog updates.

Photo-sharing websites Shutterfly.com and Flickr.com also contend in the blogging arena. This choice is a great option for family members who have shared a family reunion or holiday together where many pictures are taken. It is an effective way for a variety of contributors to add and view content in one place.

Most platforms have a variety of privacy settings, so consider who you want to have access to your blog when making your selection.

STEP 2: Set Up Your Writers

Though Cook is the only contributor to her blog, many families choose to share login information, which allows multiple members of the family to contribute posts and pictures to the blog and stay connected with family news.

?I like that I can control the amount of information about our lives that everyone sees,? Cook says.

When allowing multiple authors, everyone should be clear on what information is fair game. Maybe your son doesn?t want the world to know the story of how he was sleepwalking and ate from the family dog?s dish. Be sensitive to your child?s needs and get permission from school-age or older kids first as to whether or not they want their art or funny stories posted on the family blog.

STEP 3: Naming Your Blog

Once you and your family have chosen which blogging platform to use, and who is going to author it, it?s time to name your blog. Do some family brainstorming. Get creative. The name will be part of the blog?s Internet address, so be sure to use a memorable name that isn?t too complicated.

STEP 4: Designing Your Blog

Depending on your skill level, and the skill level of the family members contributing to the blog, make the blog as straightforward or sophisticated as you?d like. Most platforms walk users through the process with videos and forums so you can quickly get your design questions answered. You?ll need to choose a color scheme, font type, and layout. Once you get the hang of it, try adding a ?widget??a tool that allows you to display an archive, photo stream, traffic counter, calendar, or countdown to make the blog more interactive with your audience.

STEP 5: Posting

The final step in getting started is to post the first entry to your blog. Cook used her first post as an opportunity to introduce the purpose of the blog, which was to keep friends and family updated on their adventures on the road.

Posts can include text, photos, and even videos. Don?t forget to involve the kids! Try scanning in your children?s drawings and post their art to your blog?show them how others can now view their accomplishments online, potentially all over the world. Remember, nothing should be posted that could embarrass or offend anyone, or jeopardize your career or future aspirations. Think before you post.

Your Family?s Life: Private or Public?

Not every blog needs to be available to the public. Some families choose to password-protect their blog so they have more control over the viewing audience.

You can make your blog interactive by allowing viewers to add comments, or close the comments section if you don?t wish to moderate comments. You?ll have the capability to delete any comments you deem inappropriate or unnecessary even if the comments section is open.

Lindsey Groettum, 31, a special education teacher in Denver, Colo., with ties to family in Minnesota started a blog on
Blogger.com as a way to open up about the struggle she and her husband endured in their quest to start a family.

Groettum searched online for support to find others who wrote about the private, physical, and emotional experience of miscarriage but couldn?t find what she was looking for. That was motivation for her to share her story.

?I posted my first blog entry on the one-year anniversary of trying to conceive,? she says. ?When I originally signed up for the blog, I thought I?d be sharing pictures and stories about traveling with my husband, Andy.?

One of the initial roadblocks to contributing to the blog for Groettum was choosing a theme.

?When I found myself feeling hopeless after two miscarriages, I felt like I didn?t know myself anymore because it was becoming difficult to find the good in anything,? reveals Groettum. ?I found myself using small milestones to measure my day and it helped me stay positive. That?s when it came to me?the little things. ?The Little Things? became the theme and name for my blog.?

The response Groettum received from that first post revealing the couple?s struggle was overwhelming.?Friends and family showed support for the Groettums and what they were experiencing. Groettum heard from women from all different parts of her life that could relate and were thankful for someone who spoke out about the true and honest feelings that go along with the experience of miscarriages.

Since beginning her blog, Groettum feels more confident, less stressed, and calmer. Her husband has even noticed the transformation and sees the blog as a great accomplishment for her, an outlet for her and her feelings and stories. The Groettums are now excitedly expecting their first child in November.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Family Blogging

Rachel Blumhardt, an outpatient mental health counselor in The Village Family Service Center?s Fargo office, agrees with Groettum and believes there are definite benefits to blogging, but also some negative aspects.

?I have often recommended as part of therapy that clients keep a?private journal as a healthy outlet to express feelings and process problems,? shares Blumhardt.??The difference, of course, is that a written journal is typically private and blogging is often a very public experience.?

Blumhardt believes the unfiltered views of others in response to one?s blog may be affirming at times and at other times detrimental.?She feels the overall psychological well-being of the writer doing the blogging is very important in how beneficial the process can be.

?If you are emotionally sensitive and the subject matter is such that certain feedback would upset you, then a private journal might be a more appropriate avenue,? says Blumhardt.

?Blogging is a great way to document our life,? adds Groettum. ?The blog will be a living photo album of sorts for us to look back on and a way to share our life with our children.?

Both Groettum and Cook agree that there is one disadvantage to blogging. And that is, communication sometimes slowed with friends and family once they launched their blogs. ?Sometimes my friends think that what I post on the blog is the only thing that is happening in my life,? shares Groettum. ?I get fewer phone calls and emails because friends and family think they?re keeping up with me by reading the blog.?

Cook agrees.

?What I share on the blog isn?t the complete picture,? she says. ?It?s still important to stay in touch, and my blog doesn?t replace that. Skype is now filling that gap for us when we?re overseas so we can get face time with our family.?

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney campaigned in each other's shadow for a third straight day, hunting for votes already beginning to be cast and arguing over who would be the better job creator.

The president rallied voters in Virginia Beach while Romney told veterans in Springfield, to the north, that across-the-board defense spending cuts scheduled to take effect in January under a deal Obama made with Congress are "a kind of a gun-to-your-head opportunity."

"It's a strange proposal in the first place," Romney told about 200 people at the American Legion post outside Washington. "It's even stranger it's being put into place."

The candidates' debate spread across the airways in Virginia and a handful of other swing states where the campaign is being waged in its final days. Obama released the latest in a series of new ads his campaign has produced featuring a secret recording of Romney saying that 47 percent of Americans believe they are victims and are dependent on government. The latest spot features audio of Romney speaking over photos of people who might fit into that 47 percent category: women with children, veterans, Hispanics and working-class women.

Obama also released a lengthy two-minute commercial in which he speaks into the camera and describes a "new economic patriotism" that he says will create 1 million manufacturing jobs, cut oil imports and hire thousands of new teachers.

Both ads are set to air in New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Nevada and Colorado. They were not running in North Carolina, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, underscoring the states where the president's campaign contends the election is truly being fought.

Although Election Day is six weeks away, ballots are already being cast in some of those swing states.

"It's game day in America," Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters traveling with the president. She noted that Thursday marked the start of early voting in Iowa and that Virginia was sending out absentee ballots.

Obama drove home his commercial's message at the rally, promoting the "new economic patriotism" as rooted in a belief that a growing economy begins with a strong middle class. "I don't think we can get very far with leaders who write off half the nation as a bunch of victims, who never take responsibility for their own lives," Obama said.

Romney argued Obama doesn't deserve another chance to improve the economy, pointing to the Commerce Department's announcement hours earlier of sluggish economic growth in the last quarter. The growth rate was lowered from a previous estimate of 1.7 percent to 1.3 percent for April-June because of the severe drought that reduced farm production in the Midwest.

"Our economy needs to be reinvigorated," he said. "We can't afford four more years of the last four years."

In Virginia, where the military is crucial, Romney said the pending defense spending cuts would devastate the military and eliminate jobs in the state. He said it is "unthinkable" that the U.S. would cut its commitment to the military in a world that remains "troubled and dangerous."

Romney and other Republicans have tried to blame Obama alone for the defense cuts, especially in Virginia. But the GOP overwhelmingly backed the reductions when Congress passed the legislation in August 2011.

Romney has said it was "a mistake" for Republicans to agree to the deal.

Amid both campaigns' hunt for working-class voters, Romney released a new ad Thursday aimed at coal miners. It included video of Obama as a candidate in 2008 saying he would support laws to force emitters of greenhouse gases to buy allowances at auction. "So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them," Obama says in the ad.

Meanwhile, new Republican-leaning independent groups have entered the presidential advertising fray as polling suggests Romney's campaign may be losing ground against Obama in key states such as Ohio and Florida.

The commercials, aimed at voters who supported Obama in 2008 but are now undecided, join those from the campaigns and outside groups swamping a narrow and possibly shrinking map of competitive states in the fast-moving presidential contest. Americans for Job Security launched an $8.7 million ad buy in six battleground states, while the Ending Spending Action Fund, a new conservative group bankrolled by billionaire Joe Ricketts, was set to debut a $10 million, four-state ad campaign on Thursday.

Obama supporters also are working to keep Romney's "47 percent" comments alive. Democratic super PAC Priorities USA Action and a political group tied to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees released a radio ad in Ohio and Virginia airing the remarks. The ad, part of a $1.25 million radio buy, tells listeners Romney's "just not looking out for us."

Dot Earth Blog: Priest Included in Philippines Investigation of Ivory Smuggling

7:04 p.m. | Updated below |

There?s an important development in the global ivory wars, stemming directly from the great National Geographic article (explored on Dot Earth recently) that focused on the demand created by the market for religious icons carved from elephant tusks. A Catholic priest, whose statements about ways to illicitly ship ivory to the United States were featured in the magazine article, is being investigated by government authorities in the Philippines. Here are the details, as reported by Floyd Whaley out of Manila for The Times:

MANILA ? Philippine law enforcement officials said on Wednesday that they were investigating whether a senior priest in the Roman Catholic Church was involved in the smuggling of elephant ivory to feed country?s passion for religious icons.

The investigation was prompted by an article in the October issue of National Geographic magazine that quotes Msgr. Crist?bal Garcia, a senior church official on the central Philippine island of Cebu, as telling an American reporter how to smuggle illegal elephant ivory figurines into the United States. ?Wrap it in old, stinky underwear and pour ketchup on it,? he is quoted as saying, to deter inspection.

The Philippine National Bureau of Investigation and the country?s wildlife protection agency are investigating the claims made in the article, government officials said. [Read the rest.]

6:03 p.m. |Update

There?s an update on another issue that has dogged Garcia for 20 years:

CEBU CITY, Philippines? Msgr. Cristobal Garcia has been suspended and stripped of his positions in the archdiocese of Cebu on orders of the Vatican while the Holy See investigates accusations he molested altar boys more than 20 years ago in the United States.

Msgr. Achilles Dakay, the archdiocese?s media liaison officer, said Garcia?s suspension came months before the priest was implicated by a National Geographic article in illegal trade of ivory in the Philippines. [Read the rest.]

7:03 p.m. |Update

Bryan Christy, the author of the article that triggered the new ivory inquiries in the Philippines, has a post up at National Geographic Web site. Here?s an excerpt:

Earlier today Jose S. Palma, Archbishop of Cebu, held a press conference, ?Ivory Worship and Msgr. Cris Garcia? (see below), in which he reportedly announced that ivory collector Monsignor Garcia had been suspended and stripped of his position in the archdiocese of Cebu on orders of the Vatican. Palma emphasized that this move was not the result of my investigation, which features Garcia, but rather is the result of Garcia?s sexual abuse of minor boys while serving in Los Angeles, California in the 1980s. The case was exposed by Brooks Egerton of the Dallas Morning News as part of that newspaper?s 2005 series, ?Runaway Priests: Hiding in Plain Sight.? My story cited the Dallas Morning News story and reiterated Garcia?s past. [Read the rest.]

From the lab Lumia 920 lowlight shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III video

It looks like Nokia's controversial marketing move, which involved using pro DSLRs to "simulate" low-light shooting, was even less necessary that the smartphone maker may have thought. During our visit to the company's Tampere, Finland research and development complex, we were given access to a comprehensive testing suite, enabling us to shoot with a Lumia 920 prototype and a handful of competing products in a controlled lighting environment. Technicians dimmed the lights and let us snap a static scene with each handset at just 5 lux -- a level on par with what you may expect on a dimly lit city street in the middle of the night. The 920 took the cake, without question, but the iPhone didn't fare too poorly itself, snatching up nearly as much light as the Nokia device. The 808 PureView also performed quite well, but the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III yielded unusable results.

It's one thing to snag proper exposure, though -- capturing sharp details with little noise and superior color balance is an entirely different beast, and the Lumia managed to do just that, as you'll see in our 100-percent-view shots further on. Later in the evening we hit the streets of Helsinki for a real-world shootout. The 920 did present some issues with exaggerated shake and other rapid movements, but it offered up excellent results overall, even in scenes that were too dark for us to make out any details with our own eyes. Our nighttime shoot can be found in the gallery below, followed by plenty of comparison photos after the break.

Little evidence supports medical treatment options for adolescents with autism

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Vanderbilt University researchers are reporting today that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of medical interventions in adolescents and young adults with autism.

Despite studies that show that many adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorders are being prescribed medications, there is almost no evidence to show whether these medications are helpful in this population, the researchers said.

These findings are featured in the Sept. 24 issue of Pediatrics.

"We need more research to be able to understand how to treat core symptoms of autism in this population, as well as common associated symptoms such as anxiety, compulsive behaviors and agitation," said Jeremy Veenstra-VanderWeele, M.D., assistant professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Pharmacology and Vanderbilt Kennedy Center investigator.

"Individuals, families and clinicians currently have to make decisions together, often in a state of desperation, without clear guidance on what might make things better and what might make things worse, and too often, people with autism spectrum disorders end up on one or more medications without a clear sense of whether the medicine is helping."

This research is part of a larger report on interventions for adolescents and young adults with autism that found there is little evidence to support findings, good or bad, for all therapies currently used.

The researchers systematically screened more than 4,500 studies and reviewed the 32 studies published from January 1980 to December 2011 on therapies for people ages 13 to 30 with autism spectrum disorders. They focused on the outcomes, including harms and adverse effects, of interventions, including medical, behavioral, educational and vocational.

Key findings:

Some evidence revealed that treatments could improve social skills and educational outcomes such as vocabulary or reading, but the studies were generally small and had limited follow-up.

Limited evidence supports the use of medical interventions in adolescents and young adults with autism. The most consistent findings were identified for the effects of antipsychotic medications on reducing problem behaviors that tend to occur with autism, such as irritability and aggression. Harms associated with medications included sedation and weight gain.

Only five articles tested vocational interventions, all of which suggested that certain vocational interventions may be effective for certain individuals, but each study had significant flaws that limited the researchers' confidence in their conclusions. The findings on vocational interventions were featured in the Aug. 27 issue of Pediatrics.

Although the prevalence of autism is on the rise, much remains to be discovered when it comes to interventions for this population, the researchers concluded.

As recently as the 1970s, autism was believed to affect just one in 2,000 children, but newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in 88 children has an autism spectrum disorder. Boys with autism outnumber girls 5-to-1, which estimates that one in 54 boys in the United States has autism.

Curiosity rover touches 1st Martian rock

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity reached out and touched a Martian rock with its huge robotic arm for the first time, then took off on its longest Red Planet drive to date.

Curiosity spent the past several days investigating a strange pyramid-shaped stone named "Jake Matijevic," testing out some of the gear at the end of its 7-foot-long (2.1 meters) arm. These tools include the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS), which measures elemental composition, and the Mars Hand Lens Imager close-up camera, or MAHLI.

The rover performed these initial "contact science" operations on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 22 and 23), researchers said. Photos snapped on those days show Curiosity's arm sidled up against "Jake Matijevic," with the arm's turret obscuring most of the 16-inch-tall (25 centimeters) rock.

"I did a science! 1st contact science on rock target Jake," the Curiosity team announced Saturday (Sept. 22) via the rover's Twitter feed @MarsCuriosity, which has more than 1.1 million followers. "Here's an action shot." [Curiosity Mars Rover: 11 Amazing Facts]

Curiosity also zapped "Jake Matijevic" with the laser on its ChemCam instrument, which reads rock composition from the vaporized bits. Comparing the results should help cross-calibrate the two instruments, researchers said.

The ChemCam work wrapped up Monday (Sept. 24), at which point Curiosity embarked on a 138-foot (42 m) drive ? the longest one-day jaunt for the rover since it landed inside Mars' Gale Crater on the night of Aug. 5.

Curiosity is making its way toward a site called Glenelg, which lies 1,300 feet (400 m) from the rover's touchdown site. Before Monday's drive, the mission team had said Curiosity was about halfway to Glenelg.

Scientists will likely soon begin looking for sandy areas to try out Curiosity's scooping system for the first time. The arm will deposit bits of Martian soil into the analytical instruments on the rover's body, which are known as SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) and CheMin (short for Chemistry & Mineralogy).?

[Related: Stunning photo shows rover tracks from space]

The first use of Curiosity's rock-boring drill, which also sits at the end of the rover's arm, will come sometime after that, researchers have said.

While team members are keen to see what Curiosity discovers at Glenelg, the $2.5 billion rover's main destination is the base of Mount Sharp. This odd mountain rises 3.4 miles (5.5 km) into the Red Planet sky from Gale Crater's center, and its foothills show signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water.

Those foothills lie about 6 miles (10 km) away from Curiosity's landing site. The rover ? whose main task is to determine if the Gale area could ever have supported microbial life ? may be ready to turn its wheels toward the interesting deposits near the end of the year, scientists have said.

The rock "Jake Matijevic" takes its name from Curiosity's surface operations systems chief engineer, who died Aug. 20 at the age of 64. Matijevic, who was based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., also worked on all three previous Mars rovers ? Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity ? NASA officials said.

BBM for BlackBerry 10 gets a retooled UI, predictive keyboard with language detection

Everyone's favorite messaging service, BBM has broke from cover in its new BlackBerry 10 digs at BlackBerry Jam Americas 2012. The software is sporting a redesigned UI, which places the focus on your contacts' photos instead of the regular ol' list of names. Speech bubbles that we've all become familiar with are still here and emoticons get cozy as well. Another new feature is the predictive keyboard that's capable of detecting the language that you're typing in and offers the appropriate suggestions that you may need -- even if you're switching back and forth.

Blizzard Considers Free to Play Starcraft II | Video Game Blog, Video ...

Whether you?re an eSports?veteran?or not, one thing is quite clear. Starcraft II is serious business, and no, not just in Korea. The game has quite a following, and has been one of the biggest games in eSports, right up there with Halo. With that out of the way, let?s get right into this, now shall we?

An important eSports?conference?took place on September 21st, in Valencia. Part of many things discussed was Blizzard actually considering a free to play option for Starcraft II multiplayer. With Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm on the way, it would be a great idea for Blizzard to do just that. With games such as LoL and DOTA2 doing this already, it only makes sense to jump on the bandwagon. Just don?t consider Starcraft the same type of game as either of the former mentioned games. It could land you into a heated debate with some passionate fans.

All jokes aside, this is nothing but good news. Dustin Browder (lead designer, Starcraft II) is ?looking? into it and had the following to say:

?We don?t know how we would monetize it. While it might be good fun for me to play against someone with only half the units available to them, that?s not going to be an enjoyable experience for them.?

The future of Starcraft II is looking better and better. One would then not to worry about having all three ?story? games, in order to just try and Zerg rush other players online. More on this for sure, if it indeed becomes official.
