The invasive fungus, Basidiobolus ranarum, is typically found in the soil, decaying organic matter and the gastrointestinal tracts of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and bats.
Mayo researchers studied 44 cases of human gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis reported from around the world, including 17 from Arizona, one from southern Utah and one from elsewhere in the U.S. Eight of the 44 patients died. Mayo's review of the cases is published online in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
Basidiobolomycosis is usually a subcutaneous infection in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world that develops following traumatic inoculation of the fungus under the skin. The emergence of gastrointestinal involvement with Basidiobolus in arid regions has been considered unusual.
"The exact mode of acquisition of this gastrointestinal infection is unclear, although consumption of contaminated food or dirt is the favored hypothesis," says lead author H.R. Vikram, M.D., an infectious diseases physician at Mayo Clinic, where seven of the 19 U.S. cases studied were treated. "The infection is still considered so rare that no one had put together a complete description." He adds that more study needs to be done to determine how this infection is contracted, what underlying diseases might predispose patients to this infection and how best to treat it. He emphasizes that early recognition is key to successful treatment.
The first U.S. case of gastrointestinal Basidiobolus infection was reported in 1986. The CDC subsequently investigated six cases in Arizona between 1994 and 1999. This sparked the interest of researchers at Mayo Clinic in Arizona to study this infection.
Patients with this rare fungal infection had non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain or a mass that could be felt on examination. Before a conclusive diagnosis of the fungal infection was made, most patients were thought to have an abdominal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or diverticulitis. Surgical resection of the area of involvement and prolonged antifungal therapy successfully treated most patients.

WASHINGTON, March 30, 2012 - Bolstered by positive same-store sales and traffic results and an optimistic outlook among restaurant operators, the National Restaurant Association?sRestaurant Performance Index (RPI) remained above 100 for the fourth consecutive month in February.? The RPI - a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry - stood at 101.9 in February, up 0.6 percent from January?s level of 101.3.? In addition, the RPI stood solidly above the 100 threshold in February, which signifies expansion in the index of key industry indicators.
?Buoyed by continued gains in national employment and an extra day in February as a result of Leap Year, a solid majority of restaurant operators reported positive same-store sales and traffic results,? said Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the Research and Knowledge Group for the Association.? ?In addition, restaurant operators are bullish about sales growth in the months ahead, while their outlook for the economy remains cautiously optimistic.?
?Perhaps the most positive indicator is the optimistic outlook for staffing levels in the months ahead,? Riehle added.? ?Only seven percent of restaurant operators expect to reduce staffing levels in the next six months, the lowest level in nearly eight years.??
The RPI is constructed so that the health of the restaurant industry is measured in relation to a steady-state level of 100.? Index values above 100 indicate that key industry indicators are in a period of expansion, while index values below 100 represent a period of contraction for key industry indicators.?
The Current Situation Index, which measures current trends in four industry indicators (same-store sales, traffic, labor and capital expenditures), stood at 101.9 in February - up 1.3 percent from January?s level of 100.6.? In addition, the Current Situation Index stood above 100 for the fourth consecutive month, which signifies expansion in the current situation indicators.?
Restaurant operators reported positive same-store sales for the ninth consecutive month in February, bolstered by an extra day in February as a result of Leap Year.? Sixty-three percent of restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain between February 2011 and February 2012, up from 56 percent who reported a sales gain in January.? In comparison, just 18 percent of operators reported lower same-store sales in February, down from 26 percent who reported similarly in January.?
Restaurant operators also reported solid customer traffic results in February.? Fifty-five percent of restaurant operators reported higher customer traffic levels between February 2011 and February 2012, while just 19 percent reported a traffic decline.? Forty-seven percent of operators said they made a capital expenditure for equipment, expansion or remodeling during the last three months, up from 42 percent who reported similarly last month.
The Expectations Index, which measures restaurant operators? six-month outlook for four industry indicators (same-store sales, employees, capital expenditures and business conditions), stood at 102.0 in February - essentially unchanged from January?s level of 102.1.? February marked the sixth consecutive month that the Expectations Index stood above 100, which represents an optimistic outlook among restaurant operators for business conditions in the months ahead.? ?
For the third consecutive month, a majority of restaurant operators expect their sales to be higher in the coming months.? Fifty-three percent of restaurant operators expect to have higher sales in six months (compared to the same period in the previous year), matching the proportion who reported similarly last month.? In comparison, only nine percent of restaurant operators expect their sales volume in six months to be lower than it was during the same period in the previous year, up slightly from seven percent who reported similarly last month.
Restaurant operators are also generally optimistic about the direction of the overall economy.? Thirty-five percent of restaurant operators said they expect economic conditions to improve in six months, down slightly from 37 percent last month.? In comparison, 14 percent of operators said they expect economic conditions to worsen in the next six months, up slightly from 11 percent who reported similarly last month.?
For the fifth consecutive month, restaurant operators reported higher expectations for staffing levels in the months ahead.? Twenty-four percent of restaurant operators plan to increase staffing levels in six months (compared to the same period in the previous year), while just seven percent said they expect to reduce staffing levels in six months.?
Along with a positive outlook for sales and staffing levels, restaurant operators also continue to plan for capital spending in the months ahead.? Forty-nine percent of restaurant operators plan to make a capital expenditure for equipment, expansion or remodeling in the next six months, essentially unchanged from the proportion reporting similarly last month.?
The RPI is based on the responses to the National Restaurant Association?s Restaurant Industry Tracking Survey, which is fielded monthly among restaurant operators nationwide on a variety of indicators including sales, traffic, labor, and capital expenditures. SAN DIEGO, March 27, 2012 New research reported here today at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) provides further support for the idea that comets bombarding Earth billions of years ago carried and deposited the key ingredients for life to spring up on the planet.
About 15,000 scientists and others are expected for the meeting of the ACS the world's largest scientific society. Being held this week, it includes more than 11,700 presentations on discoveries and advances in science.
Jennifer G. Blank, Ph.D., who led the research team, described experiments that recreated with powerful laboratory "guns" and computer models the conditions that existed inside comets when these celestial objects hit Earth's atmosphere at almost 25,000 miles per hour and crashed down upon the surface. The research is part of a broader scientific effort to understand how amino acids and other ingredients for the first living things appeared on a planet that billions of years ago was barren and desolate. Amino acids make up proteins, which are the workhorses of all forms of life, ranging from microbes to people.
"Our research shows that the building blocks of life could, indeed, have remained intact despite the tremendous shock wave and other violent conditions in a comet impact," Blank said. "Comets really would have been the ideal packages for delivering ingredients for the chemical evolution thought to have resulted in life. We like the comet delivery scenario because it includes all of the ingredients for life amino acids, water and energy."
Comets are chunks of frozen gases, water, ice, dust and rock that astronomers have termed "dirty snowballs." These snowballs, however, may be 10 miles or more in diameter. Comets orbit the sun in a belt located far beyond the most distant planets in the solar system. Periodically, comets break loose and hurtle inward, where they may become visible in the sky.
Billions of years ago, however, swarms of comets and asteroids bombarded Earth with the remnants still visible as craters on the moon. Scientific evidence suggests that life on Earth began at the end of a period 3.8 billion years ago called the "late heavy bombardment" that involved both comets and asteroids. Before that, Earth was too hot for living things to survive. The earliest known fossils with evidence of life date from 3.5 billion years ago. So how could life originate so quickly when there was little evidence of water or the amino-acid building blocks for making proteins?
Blank and colleagues at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute NASA/Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., set out to check whether amino acids could remain intact after a comet's descent through Earth's atmosphere. Previous analyses of comet dust samples returned to Earth by a NASA spacecraft eliminated any doubt that amino acids do occur in comets.
In one set of experiments, they used gas guns to simulate the enormous temperatures and powerful shock waves that amino acids in comets would experience on upon entering Earth's atmosphere. The gas guns, devices that weigh thousands of pounds, hit objects with high-pressure blasts of gas moving at supersonic speeds. They shot the gas at capsules filled with amino acids, water and other materials.
The amino acids did not break down due to the heat and shock of the simulated crash. Indeed, they began forming the so-called "peptide bonds" that link amino acids together into proteins. The pressure from the impact of the crash apparently offset the intense heat and also supplied the energy needed to create the peptides, she explained. In other experiments, Blank's team used sophisticated computer models to simulate conditions as comets collided with Earth.
Blank suggested that there may well have been multiple deliveries of seedlings of life through the years from comets, asteroids and meteorites.

We also used reactive molecular dynamics calculations to simulate the breaking and forming of chemical bonds behind a shock front. We focused on three amino acids (Gly, Pro, Lys) with very different side chain structures. Our discussion will address the role of explicit, condensed phase (H2O) molecules in defining activation volumes and transition state energies and the role of pressure in inhibiting thermal breakdown of our initial materials. Model results will be compared with data from experimental ballistic impact studies and discussed in the context of prebiotic chemical evolution.

On the other side of this hole is a filter, which keeps dirt and debris from getting inside the drive. However, this filter does not stop heavy amounts of moisture (especially in flood situations) or moisture vapor (such as found in a freezer). This moisture vapor has been known to settle on the platters and when a system is powered up, the read/write head would resemble an airplane flying into a mountain.

Pam Walsh does not own a smartphone. Walsh, a senior at Bryant University in Rhode Island, is a commuter student and says she uses the money that would go toward phone payments for gas instead. But, she notes, there have been situations when a smartphone, with its Internet capabilities, would have been useful.
"As a commuter student, there's always a chance that weather will be poor and classes will be canceled because of it, but I may not find out about it until I'm on campus," she says. "The professor might have canceled right before class through an E-mail. If I had a smartphone, I would have gotten the E-mail and I wouldn't have had to drive to class in horrible conditions."

For Walsh, who has never owned a smartphone, the constant urge to stay connected to the world via phone is not an issue. "I don't really go through it," she says. "As long as I'm not waiting on a phone call or a text message from someone, I can just leave [the phone] aside."
But for some college students, leaving a phone behind may cause feelings of anxiety and panic, which has brought one phobia to the forefront: nomophobia--the fear of being without your cellphone. According to a recent survey by SecurEnvoy, a company that specializes in digital passwords, which surveyed 1,000 people in the United Kingdom, 66 percent of respondents noted they fear losing or being without their phone.
Not surprisingly, people between the ages of 18 and 24 are the most nomophobic, with 77 percent of respondents among the age group noting this fear. "I definitely don't want to be like that," Walsh says. "I see how distracted people are--they just sit there on their phones."

The rise of nomophobia among college-aged people has undoubtedly been triggered by the meteoric rise of smartphones on college campuses. A February survey of students at Ball State University in Indiana noted this growth, with smartphone ownership on campus more than doubling in three years--from 27 percent in 2009 to 69 percent in 2012.
While the rise of smartphone ownership paired with the obvious distractions of being connected at all times are worrisome to many college professors, some are finding ways to use them for added engagement.
Aria Finger, a business professor at New York University and the COO of DoSomething.org, a nonprofit organization geared toward teens and social change, allows the use of phones in her courses. Smartphones have enabled her classes to have stronger debates because it has allowed students to use their phones for real-time research tools, Finger notes. Calling smartphones an "immediate fact check," she says students have become more engaged in the classroom.
Although Finger notes positive experiences with smartphones in the classroom, she says that there are professors who will face difficulties. "If you have 150 kids in a class, there will be some kids zoning out," she acknowledges. "You don't want an entire class of faces down, students looking in their laps [at their phones]."

This is a fear of Vassilis Dalakas, a marketing professor at California State University--San Marcos, who used to allow smartphones in the classroom but has restricted them because of the distractions they have caused.
"I used to think that [the students] are adults and they can make their own choices," Dalakas says. "But it got to the point of being distracting, not only to the person using it but to multiple people in the classroom."
Dalakas concedes that there are benefits of using the technology but he is skeptical of the advantages in the academic arena. "My guess is a professor would have to be very creative in a way that integrates the technology in the classroom."

NYU professor Finger notes that there may be some struggles among professors to accept the use of smartphones in the classroom, but advises educators to embrace the cultural change.
"As with any new technology, there are good and bad sides," Finger says. "It's not all bad--young people's connectivity means they are more likely to engage with professors. [We should] use these technologies [with students] for good instead of yelling at them because it isn't going to work."
